A Brief Profile:

Valerie graduated from Reading University with an honours degree in Zoology and she then went on to complete her dietetics training at the University of London. She rose in rank to become Chief III Dietitian at Guy's teaching hospital in London. Whilst at Guy's, she played a vital part in the setting up of a Clinical Nutrition Working Party which produced an Enteral Feeding policy and she trained about 12 dietetic students a year many of whom are now holding Senior positions in various hospitals throughout the United Kingdom. She also gave lectures to student nurses. She was also instrumental in assisting various research projects one of which included the effect of a long-term fat-modified diet on serum lipoprotein levels of cholesterol and triglyceride in patients on home haemodialysis (published in Clinical Science Received 1st April/ 21st August 1980; Published 1981).

In 1991 Valerie pioneered and organised the dietetic service at a rehabilitation hospital and a Hospice in West London. To help improve the care of patients with Pressure Sores, she participated in an Audit. Presently she is still working with the above mentioned units. She also does dietetic clinics at various GP Surgeries. At one occasion she worked for 7 GP Practices : which comprised a combination of about 20 Doctors, the patients ranged from 4000 - to about 10 000 per surgery.

For many years Valerie has been an active and extended member of the Nicholas household, whose photograph is below. If you are keen to know how this unity came about please visit:

The circumstances that blended us as a family

A pastor once elaborated on this word unity: We are united on the Major Points which leads to a common harmony. The major points are inserted within the website.

Psalm 133 verse 3:

Harmony is as refreshing as the dew from Mount Hermon
that falls on the mountains of Zion.
And the LORD has pronounced his blessing,
        even life forevermore.

Latest update:

March 2004

Valerie Meilton is now also a Smoking Cessation Community Advisor. She went for training with The Thelma Golding Centre of Ealing, Hammersmith and Hounslow Smoking Cessation Service. We offer a word of thanks to Dr Shergill, of Hillview Surgery, Bilton Road, Perryvale, Greenford, Middlesex, who encouraged Valerie to take up this new venture.

Smoking cessation trial at Hillview Surgery

The Smoking Cessation Service started a clinic at Hillview Surgery in Perivale last March, initially just as a trial at that practice. So far 24 people have participated, nine have given up smoking and 5 are currently attending the clinic.

At the initial visit, we explain the treatment process and give clients advice about nicotine replacement therapy and Zyban, after discussing their smoking habits. We then take a carbon monoxide reading with a monitor at every visit to assess progress.

We help clients to prepare for their individual quite days, which follow their second visit, and see them once a week to offer encouragement. This encouragement is really necessary for someone who wants to give up smoking.

It is very much a team effort:

Clients are referred by GPs or practice nurses, often from a new patient check

Reception staff book the client for the six-week course and help in the smooth running of the clinics

A designated member of staff issues the necessary prescriptions

Although clients complete a detailed questionnaire, it is useful for us to be able to confirm medical details via the practice’s computer records. It is also reassuring to have doctors on site if there are any major concerns.

I would like to thank Dr Shergill for leading the project, practice manager Lesley Stuart for facilitating and Aarun Taylor, Head of Ealing PCT’s Smoking Cessation Service for help and support. There are plans to expand the service at Hillview and to open up more clinics at other practices in the borough.

Referencing the photograph above:Valerie baby set Paul since he was 2 years old. When Saida and Anton were not able to do it, she escorted Paul to his Junior school. She witnessed personally, first hand his stages of development from a toddler to graduating from Cambridge. She participated well in his spiritual growth too. She faithfully purchased for Paul the following Christian periodicals, YPS and TOPZ. These booklets are published by the Selwyn Hughes Christian Ministry, Crusade for World Revival. These items helped Paul tremendously to come to understand the Son of God, Jesus Christ of Nazareth

2007 Update  : The Blessing

Valerie attended a residential course at Queen Margaret College, Edinburgh, Scotland in the first week of June 2007. This was as part of her Clinical Update Course for the Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition Group of the British Dietetic Association. We rejoice that she received the necessary funding for this Course for it was quite costly.

The current Chairman of the PEN Group is Mr. Peter Turner. He states that the PENG Clinical Update is a post graduate British Dietetic Association validated course for dietitians working in nutrition support. The present course leader is Ailsa Kennedy. Apparently the Group has started looking into the possibility of taking the course to Masters level.

Steve completed his education graduating with Honours from Jesus College, University of Cambridge, having read mathematics. His studies included the fourth year, known as Part III.
